They say less is more, and simplicity is key. They’re right. Although, I am still not sure who they are! But, when it comes to fashion, some things never go out of style, black dresses, jeans and t-shirts, Chuck Taylors. All are simple, but stylish, which is the key to modular design. From fashion, to jewelry to haircuts, to architecture and interior design: Modular design is everywhere. It’s simple, it’s sassy and it’s chic, or should we say cheek!
A tried and true fav of design junkies is Richard Schultz. He’s the king of the little black dress of furniture design. Now, we have more reason to bow down to his “why didn’t I think of that?!” designs. He just introduced the Swell Seating Collection: a line of sleek modular outdoor furniture. There’s a reason this guy is top of his game. And may we say “We love you Richard!”
Next up is the modular house of my dreams. Marmol Radziner has stepped into the pre-fab zone. Their pre-fab houses are noted as drool worthy by the toughest critics we know (me). Pre-fab has come along way since the 1950’s, and these guys are looking to change the way you buy and build a home. Just picture one of their hot little numbers getting dropped off, all ready for you to live in: no assembly required!
There are lots of reasons to be jealous of the French, their wine, their cheese, their fashion, their general air of self-importance; do we really need another? We may not need another reason to be jealous of the French, but we sure as hell got one! Christian Lacroix, yes I said Christian Lacroix, is redesigning all of the interiors of the French Railways high-speed trains. Hey Via! Step up!
I love tigers, they’re pretty, but they’re dangerous; what girl (or boy) can resist that combo? So, by default I love Tiger of Sweden! Their designs, for men and women, follow the modular philosophy of simple construction, with impeccable execution. Hard lines and soft fabrics, prrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Now boys, sorry this next one is just for the girls, unless you’re daring… My love, Marc Jacobs, is brilliant, which is why I love him so, and he’s gone all out this fall in the shoe department! He went high, and he went shiny, and my god did he ever hit home! Marry me Marc! Marry Me!
If you have come to know us over these last few months, I am sure you’ve noticed we have a penchant for the unusual (and sometimes cruel). We couldn’t leave out the unusual this week. When I first came across the images of the new Viktor & Rolf flagship store in Milan, my eyes did a funny little dance. It’s a little twisted and a lot impressive. Everything is upside down, literally. The ceiling is on the floor and vice versa. So kudos to you, you Dutch masters of design: You can play in my sandbox anytime!
